How Long Does It Take to Upload Podcasts Onto Apple Watch

Apple has long been the dominant role player in the podcast market. Even so, while Apple Podcasts has evolved quite a flake since the "tape thespian" 1.0 version, it'south not perfect. Today, I want to expect at the good, the bad, and the ugly of Apple Podcasts with a particular focus on how the app nevertheless struggles to sync across multiple devices.

I've been listening to podcasts since 2004, so I consider myself somewhat of a veteran of the industry. I've used every major podcast app on the market. I recall sideloading MP3 files into iTunes using iPodderX. I call back when Apple tree wouldn't approve 3rd-party podcast apps because they "duplicated functionality". As a result, I am pretty opinionated on how podcasts app should piece of work and firmly believe that it's non a podcast unless you tin can subscribe in the app of your choice (don't try to convince me otherwise).

The Good

Apple Podcasts is a good app, but it's non great. Information technology makes information technology easy to find new shows, follow them, and find the virtually recent episodes. It works great for shows where y'all need to heed in a item order. In addition, it makes information technology piece of cake to share a show over iMessage to friends. With iOS 15, it'south even easy to see what shows accept been shared with you. I actually like the interface as it follows the same overall fashion as Apple tree Music. It's tightly integrated into the Os, so it's easy to utilise.

I beloved the stop-user experience of paying for premium content for specific shows. I subscribe to several premium podcasts directly with the creator, but the process of subscribing isn't as seamless as it is when you exercise information technology now in Apple Podcasts. I know Apple tree's payments aren't every bit easy on creators equally Patreon or Memberful, but information technology's easy for the user.

Overall, the app provides a bully interface for sharing and finding new shows.

The Bad

Apple Podcasts isn't for power users, and that's okay. Apps like Clouded, Castro, and Pocket Cast tin make full out the features that power users desire. Apple does need to keep striving towards making information technology a swell feel, though.

Equally I've added more shows to my following list, the app has gotten slower and slower. I've noticed this on iOS 14 and iOS xv. Apple Podcasts feels much heavier than Overcast in 24-hour interval-to-24-hour interval usage. When you mark an episode every bit played, it tin can often take four-5 seconds to actually reflect that status in the interface. With Overcast and Castro, marking as played is automatic and the UI immediately updates. I am not certain if this problem is a symptom of how many shows I subscribe to, merely it makes the app well-nigh unusable/

The Ugly

The syncing of followed shows on Apple tree Podcasts seems to work well. What doesn't seem to sync well is the Heed Now and Latest Episodes department of the app. I primarily listen to podcasts on my iPhone simply occasionally like to mind to my Mac or iPad. Whenever I launch the apps, it'southward a hot mess as information technology tries to sync everything and never ends up getting the Listen Now and Latest Episodes in sync with what's on my iPhone. So, if I do finally get them in sync manually, the iPhone somehow gets out of sync.

What tends to happen is an episode that's marked as played on ane device will testify as played on some other, but it will withal exist in the Listen Now. So why would it be in Listen Now if it's marked as played?

The image above shows what happened when I turned on syncing on Apple Podcasts on my Mac. It completely screwed up my library on my iPhone and brought back episodes previously marked as played into Up Next despite the fact they've already been marked as played.

Technically, I am sure this is not like shooting fish in a barrel to implement at Apple tree'south scale. On the other hand, Overcast and Pocket Casts accept figured out how to keep everything in sync across all of your devices so why can't Apple?

In 2021, seamless syncing to other devices is table stakes for a podcast app, and Apple tree has yet to figure out how to keep the apps in sync. Do you know how tedious iMessage feels on your Mac if information technology's been airtight for a week while yous're on vacation and it's trying to catch up on processing messages? Apple tree Podcasts syncing behaves that way daily.

Wrap up

Apple tree focuses on the content side of podcasts, only I want them to spend equally as much effort on making the app faster and figure out what is keeping the apps from staying exactly in sync while adding new features. I want to love Apple Podcasts, but I've found that the simply way I tin use the app is to merely use it on my iPhone. Otherwise, it'southward hot garbage. I detect myself wanting to utilize it every few weeks and quickly realize why information technology never sticks for me. The app is irksome and struggles to sync across all of my devices.

Do you lot use Apple tree Podcasts, or are you using a third-party alternative? Get out a comment below with which app and why.
